New Rochelle, NY- The Iona College Women's Water Polo team recognized its program's six
seniors prior to Sunday's two MAAC home games. In the water, the Gaels
swept its two games with a 12-7 win over Wagner and a dramactic 14-13
victory over St. Francis (NY). Head Coach Brian Kelly picked up his
194th victory.
The
Gaels (16-6, 3-1 MAAC) jumped out a 3-0 lead after the first quarter
and each team added two goals in the second quarter to make it 5-2
Iona. The Seahawks (10-9, 3-1 MAAC) put up another two goals in the
third quarter, but Iona countered with four goals, its best output of
the game, to hold a commanding 9-4 advantage heading into the final
quarter. The Maroon & Gold and Wagner each added three more goals
in the final quarter as Iona took home the 12-7 win.
Iona was lead on the score sheet by Maggie Wood's five goals. Mackenzie Mone followed up four tallies with Amanda Brucia, Lauren Peterson, Amanda Cody each scoring single goals. Kathleen Link had nine saves between the pipes.
In game two, Iona found itself down to the Terriers (8-7, 2-2 MAAC) by a goal after the first quarter. Each team added three tallies in the second quarter and St. Francis (NY) took a 7-6 lead into the locker room. The Gaels stormed back with a 4-2 advantage in the third quarter and reclaimed the lead at 10-9. The game was tied three times in the final quarter. The stalemate was finally broken with 36.54 seconds remaining as Maggie Wood netted her fourth goal of the game and what proved to be the game-winner as Iona held on for the 14-13 stunner.
Wood added two steals and a kickout drawn to her performance. Brucia added a hat trick with three assists, a steals and a kickout drawn. Mackenzie Mone netted a pair for the Gaels and Cecilia Leonard scored two goals with an assist and a steal before fouling out. Cody celebrated senior day with two more goals, three steals and kickout drawn. Peterson netted a goal, but it was her three assists, all to Wood, that made the game including her final assist on the game's final goal. Meghan Keller also added a goal with two steals and a kickout drawn. Sam Cody added a steal in the win. Link finished the game with 10 saves.
Iona returns to MAAC Conference action next Saturday, April 11th in Philadelphia. Iona will face the Terriers and Siena in the pool at Villanova.
