NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team defeated Army by a score of 1-0 this afternoon at Mazzella Field. The win snapped a three game skid for the Gaels who picked up their first victory since the season opening defeat of Stony Brook.
Despite a combined 13 shots taken in the first half, with Iona leading 7-6, the contest remained scoreless until midway through the second stanza. Senior Amber Blocher scored the go-ahead goal for the Maroon & Gold in the 63rd minute for her first tally of the season. Freshman Gabriella D'Aprile took a free kick from about 25 yards out on the right side that was directed into the net by Blocher.
By the end of the match, Iona held a 13-9 advantage in shots on goal. Mariel Pepe led the squad with three, followed by two each from Abby Dixon, Diane Hare, Blocher, and D'Aprile. Deanna Clegg had a game-best six shots on goal for the Black Nights.
The goalie of record for Iona was Kelly Mahoney, who came on in the 61st minute and made a pair of saves to preserve the shutout. Suzanne Baldissard guarded the net for the first 60:53, recording six saves. Army's Alex Lostetter saved 12.
The Gaels gear up for three consecutive games on the road, starting with a 7:00 pm contest at Seton Hall on Sep. 21.
