CAMBRIDGE, MA - Despite competing without three starters due to other athletic commitments, the Iona College women's water polo team was able to pick up a win in the second day of competition at the Harvard Invitational. The Gaels led throughout their Sunday morning match up with Villanova and defeated the Wildcats 9-5.
Senior captain Meghan Keller led the Gaels with four goals in the contest. Junior Maggie Wood added a goal and drew three ejections. MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Cecilia Leonard had one goal and six steals. Rookies Lauren Scheetz, Alyssa Turza and Terra Shelton also found the back of the net for the Gaels. Junior Kathleen Link made six saves for Iona.
Later in the day the Gaels were upended in a close contest by Harvard 11-8. The Gaels held tight throughout as the game was tied at half and after three quarters, but the Crimson pulled ahead in the final frame. Leonard had a strong game, notching four goals, two assists and three kickouts drawn. Keller had a goal and an assist while Scheetz added two goals for Iona. Shelton also scored against Harvard. Link finished with 12 saves.
Friday evening the Gaels fell to the New York Athletic Club by the score of 12-6.
The Gaels return to competition Feb. 20 when they take on Hartwick in their first contest at the Princeton Invitational. Start time is 10:10 am.
