ANN ARBOR, MI - The Iona College women's water polo team picked up a pair of wins on day two of play at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan. In game one, the Gaels defeated Grove City 14-4 before defeating Gannon 15-11 in game two.
Against Grove City, Iona held a 9-2 lead at halftime. A six goal third quarter by the Wolverines kept the contest close but the Gaels secured the victories with four goals in the final frame. Junior
Maggie Wood led the Gaels with eight points (5g, 3a) and drew four kickouts. Sophomore
Mackenzie Mone had five points (4g, 1a) and drew four ejections. Freshman
Lauren Scheetz had a career high four points on three goals and an assist while classmate
Alyssa Turza had two goals and an assist. Junior
Sam Cody had a goal and three assists while freshman
Terra Shelton had a goal. Senior
Meghan Keller dished out two assists for the Gaels. Junior
Kathleen Link had 11 saves in net.
Against Gannon, the Gaels led throughout, securing a 2-0 lead after the first quarter and never turning back. Sophomore
Cecilia Leonard led the Gaels with five points on four goals and an assist. Leonard also recorded two steals and a field block on the defensive end. Wood had four points (2g, 2a) and drew five ejections. Scheetz continued her career day with two goals, an assist and a steal. Cody had a goal and two assists with three steals. Turza and Keller each had two goals while Mone added a goal and won two swimoffs for the Gaels. Link had 12 saves in net and handed out three assists.
The Gaels, winners of six of their last seven, play at the Marist Invitational next weekend.
