GAELS SPLIT WITH UC DAVIS

DAVIS, CA - The Iona College softball team took to the west coast to begin the squad's Spring Break action in the Golden State. Against UC Davis on Monday, the Gaels split with the Aggies. In game 1, Iona fell 9-5, but recovered to win game by the score of 3-2.

In the opener, the Aggies opened up the scoring in the second with a four run inning and continued with another run in the fourth.

Down 5-0, the Gaels surged back in the sixth with a five run inning. With one out, freshman SS Marisa Newman singled to right field. Classmate Amy Metcalfe pinch ran and was chased home by a run scoring double by freshman CF Jodi Petersen. Freshman DH Eileen McCann singled and stole second to put two runners in scoring position for sophomore 1B Allyssa James. James produced a run via a run scoring groundout. Junior C Melanie Gettins was up next, driving in McCann with a single. After a pitching change, junior LF Erin Kyle drove Gettins in with a double and brought home by a single off the bat of sophomore 3B Chelsea Sheehan.

The Aggies came right back in the bottom of the sixth, answering the Gaels' offensive outburst with four runs to take game one by the 9-5 final. On the mound, sophomore RHP Deanne Algeo took the loss for Iona, surrendering five runs in 4.1 innings.

In game two, the Gaels opened the scoring in the third inning. Gettins opened the inning with a walk. Junior Tierney Markou pinch ran and moved to second on a ground out off the bat of Metcalfe. Markou stole third and scored on an RBI single by Kyle. With Kyle on second, junior 2B Tessa Earley drove her home with a single. Newman reached on a walk and both moved up on a wild pitch. Earley scored on a single by Petersen and the Gaels were ahead to stay.

UC Davis put up one run in both the third and fourth innings, but were unable to match Iona's three runs.

The Gaels were aided by a combined no hitter from pitchers Alyssa Maiese and Sarah Jackson. The Aggies scored runs on a wild pitch and errors.

Iona continues its west coast trip with a double header against Pacific.
