DAVIS, CA - The Iona College softball team took to the west coast to begin the squad's Spring Break action in the Golden State. Against UC Davis on Monday, the Gaels split with the Aggies. In game 1, Iona fell 9-5, but recovered to win game by the score of 3-2.
In the opener, the Aggies opened up the scoring in the second with a four run inning and continued with another run in the fourth.
Down 5-0, the Gaels surged back in the sixth with a five run inning. With one out, freshman SS

Amy Metcalfe pinch ran and was chased home by a run scoring double by freshman CF
Jodi Petersen. Freshman DH
Eileen McCann singled and stole second to put two runners in scoring position for sophomore 1B
Allyssa James. James produced a run via a run scoring groundout. Junior C
Melanie Gettins was up next, driving in McCann with a single. After a pitching change, junior LF
Erin Kyle drove Gettins in with a double and brought home by a single off the bat of sophomore 3B
Chelsea Sheehan.
The Aggies came right back in the bottom of the sixth, answering the Gaels' offensive outburst with four runs to take game one by the 9-5 final. On the mound, sophomore RHP
Deanne Algeo took the loss for Iona, surrendering five runs in 4.1 innings.
In game two, the Gaels opened the scoring in the third inning. Gettins opened the inning with a walk. Junior
Tierney Markou pinch ran and moved to second on a ground out off the bat of Metcalfe. Markou stole third and scored on an RBI single by Kyle. With Kyle on second, junior 2B
Tessa Earley drove her home with a single. Newman reached on a walk and both moved up on a wild pitch. Earley scored on a single by Petersen and the Gaels were ahead to stay.
UC Davis put up one run in both the third and fourth innings, but were unable to match Iona's three runs.
The Gaels were aided by a combined no hitter from pitchers
Alyssa Maiese and
Sarah Jackson. The Aggies scored runs on a wild pitch and errors.
Iona continues its west coast trip with a double header against Pacific.
