ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Iona College baseball team dropped its final three contests against Navy at Max Bishop Stadium on Monday and Tuesday.
In Game 1 of the doubleheader on Monday, Navy scored six runs in the third and fourth innings in a seven inning 8-5 win. The Gaels jumped ahead with four runs in their first two at bats. Sophomore RF Dean Dignelli got his team on the board in the first with an RBI single through the left that scored junior 2B Nick Rossetti. Iona tacked on three more in the second. Rossetti's two-run double was followed by an RBI groundout by rookie 3B Kyle Charron.
Trailing 6-4 in the fifth, the Gaels cut their deficit to a run on an RBI groundout by sophomore 1B Michael Chiaravalloti. That was as close as the team would get as Navy added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to round out the scoring.
Rossetti and Dignelli each had two hits in the loss. Rookie RHP Pete Ladis took the loss in relief.
Iona scored a run in the first and eighth innings in game two but fell 5-2 to the Midshipmen. An RBI double by Dignelli and a run scoring single by Rossetti accounted for the Gaels two runs.
Dignelli recorded another two hits in the contest. Rookie RHP Matt Marley took the loss.
A four run fifth inning for Navy accounted for the different in a 6-2 Iona loss in the series finale. The Gaels tied the score at 1-1 and 2-2 in the second and fourth innings after allowing a tally in the previous half inning.
Sophomore RF Colin Lyall RBI singles in both scoring innnings for the Gaels scored Dignelli each time. Lyall and junior C Chris Griffin had multiple hits. Freshman RHP Matt Petro took the loss in relief.
Iona continues its stretch of nine games in 10 days tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Stony Brook.
