STONY BROOK, NY - Sophomore OFs Colin Lyall and Dean Dignelli combined for five hits and the Iona College baseball team had its second highest run output of the season but it was not enough in a 22-11 loss to Stony Brook at University Field. The Gaels scored seven runs in the first two innings in the defeat.
After a bases loaded walk to senior LF Andrew Passerelle, Dignelli smacked a long, one-out grand slam home run to dead centerfield in team's five run second inning. The Seawolves answered with 10 runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
Dignelli was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and the four RBI. Lyall also scored twice and recorded three hits in his five plate appearances. Passerelle reached base three times with two walks and a hit by pitch. He also recorded two RBI including a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Junior 2B Nick Rossetti, sophomore DH Chris Burke and sophomore SS Eric Capowski also scored twice in the game. Capowski recorded two base hits in the loss.
The Gaels take a much needed day off after their fifth game in four days and return to action on Friday when they take on the Seawolves again in the first of three contests at the Seton Hall Strike Out Cancer Tournament in South Orange, NJ this weekend.
