SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The Iona College baseball team came up on the short end of a 3-2 pitchers duel against Stony Brook at the Seton Hall Strikeout Cancer Tournament at Carroll Field. Senior LHP Justin Wiley tossed seven innings, allowed six hits and two runs in the no decision.
In contrast to the slug fest on Long Island three days prior, the two teams struggled to plate a run. Junior 2B Nick Rossetti led off the game with a triple and scored two batters later on an RBI single by senior LF Andrew Passerelle. The lead was short lived as the Seawolves knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Stony Brook scratched across a go-ahead run to make the score 2-1. The Gaels answered in their half of the seventh. Junior C Chris Griffin led off with a single and advanced to second on a miscue by the Seawolf right fielder. After advancing to third on a ground out, he scored on a wild pitch to tie the score for the second time.
Stony Brook manufactured their go-ahead run in the eighth inning with three singles off freshman relief pitcher Matt Petro.
Rossetti had another two hits in the contest. Passerelle, Griffin, sophomore 3B Chris Burke and 1B Michael Chiaravalloti each had solo hits in the loss.
The Gaels take on Central Connecticut tomorrow morning in their SHU Tournament finale at 10:00.
