SACRAMENTO, CA - The Iona College softball team continued play at the Capital Classic by splitting a pair of matchups. In the first game of the day, the Gaels fell to Nevada 5-1, but the Gaels prevailed in their second contest, defeating Sacramento State 5-0.

Eileen McCann with a single to knot the contest at one. Nevada controlled the offensive action the rest of the way, scoring run in the fourth and fifth innings before sealing the game with a two run seventh.

Beth Kann made her first start of the season in the circle. In seven innings, she gave up four earned runs, nine hits, walked three and struck out two batters.
In the afternoon contest, the Gaels jumped out to an early lead after a three run first inning. Junior 2B

Jodi Petersen on base, McCann lauched her sixth home run of the season to center and the Gaels led 3-0.

Allyssa James drove in Petersen with a run scoring single and in the seventh Newman scored the final run of the game on a Sacramento State wild pitch.

Sarah Jackson pitched a complete game shutout for the Gaels, allowing just five hits and striking out five. She evened her season mark at 3-3 with the complete game.
The Gaels conclude their west coast swing with a rematch with Nevada Sunday at 12:00 pm.
