OLD WESTBURY, NY - The Iona College baseball team slugged its way to a 10-3 victory over New York Tech at President's Field this afternoon. The Gaels used crooked numbers in the first, fifth and seventh innings in the non-conference win.
The Maroon & Gold got on the scoreboard early with a three run first inning. Junior 2B
Nick Rossetti drew a walk to lead off the game and moved to third base on C
Chris Griffin's single to right field. He would score on a wild pitch for the squad's first run. With one out, sophomore CF
Dean Dignelli reached base on catcher's interference to put runners on first and second. Sophomore 1B
Michael Chiaravalloti plated Griffin with an RBI single of his own. Two batters later, sophomore
Colin Lyall picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
After allowing two runs in the bottom of the third, Iona tacked on four of their own in the fifth. With two out, Griffin drew a walk. Senior LF
Andrew Passerelle blasted his third home run of the season over the left field fence to make the score 5-2. Dignelli followed with a home run of his own. After a Chiaravallotti walk, he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore DH
James Beck continued his torrid hitting with an RBI base hit to cap the scoring in the inning.
New York Tech would score its third and final run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. Iona answered with three more in the seventh. With a runner on first and second and one out, Beck drove in his second run of the contest with a double down the right field line. He and Chiaravallotti scored on Lyall's two run double.
Eight of the Gaels' nine starters picked up hits in the contest. Dignelli led with three and scored three runs while Passerelle and Beck each had a pair of hits. Lyall's three RBI led the way offensively.
Rookie RHP
Kyle Charron (2-2) earned the win, tossing three innings while allowing one earned run with four strikeouts. Sophomore RHP
Sean Darsee pitched the middle third of the contest and also had four K's. Junior RHP
Mike Brizzolara earned a three-inning save facing two batters over the minimum with four strikeouts. He allowed just one hit while another batter reached base on a strike out and a wild pitch.
The Gaels open up MAAC play this weekend on the road with a three-game series at Canisius on Saturday (Mar. 27) and Sunday (Mar. 28) in Buffalo.
