NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Niagara in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Salesian Field. The Purple Eagles took the first game 20-4 and the night cap 21-15 in extra innings.
Sophomore 3B
Chris Burke delivered the big blow for the Gaels in the game with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Burke's first home run of the year was one of two hits in the contest for the second-year infielder. Rookie RF
Kyle Charron picked up Iona's other RBI with a base hit in the bottom of the second. Sophomore DH
James Beck was hitless but scored two runs in the loss.
Both teams had their bats going in a wild second game. Four different Iona players had at least three hits led by senior LF
Andrew Passerelle's 4-for-6 effort. He scored a run and drove in three. Burke, junior 2B
Nick Rossetti and sophomore RF
Colin Lyall each had three hits. Rossetti scored three times and drove in three runs in the loss. Rookie CF
Anthony Muccio had two hits and a team best four RBI.
The Gaels rallied from a 6-0 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning. They also erased a 12-7 Niagara lead with eight runs in fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Purple Eagles used a seven run rally in the top of the ninth.
The two teams complete the three-game series on Sunday at noon.
