NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College softball team lost a non conference tilt with Stony Brook by a score of 4-3 Thursday afternoon. It was the first loss for the Gaels in their last eight contests.
Stony Brook would get all of their runs in the top of the first inning off Iona starter
Beth Kann. The Seawolves had six hits in the inning and scored three unearned runs.
The Gaels would begin to claw back in the third when freshman DP
Eileen McCann drove in sophomore RF
Melanie Hay so opened the inning with a single. Iona scored again in the fifth. With one out, junior 2B
Tessa Earley and freshman SS
Marisa Newman each drew walks. Freshman CF
Jodi Petersen followed with a walk to load the bases. After Earley was forced out at home, sophomore 1B
Allyssa James drove in Newman with a single and the Gaels trailed 4-2.
The Gaels would bat in the bottom of the seventh inning. McCann and James would each hit one out singles and junior LF
Erin Kyle reached on an error. Junior C
Melanie Gettins would ground out to drive in a run but that would be close as Iona got as Stony Brook told the 4-3 final.
On the mound, Kann took the loss, falling to 0-2. McCann and junior
Alyssa Maiese would combine for 6.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and striking out six batters combined.
Iona is in action Saturday when they host Siena in a MAAC double header beginning at 1:00 pm.
