NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College softball team remained undefeated in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contests this season after sweeping Marist in a double header Sunday at Rice Oval. The Gaels took game one 10-2 before picking up a 5-0 victory in game two.
In game one, the Gaels opened the scoring in the second inning. Sophomore 1B
Allyssa James singled to open the frame and was pinch run for by junior
Tierney Markou. A pass ball moved Markou into scoring position where she was driven in by junior C
Melanie Gettins to put Iona up 1-0.
Marist put their only runs of the afternoon across in the fourth when LF Christina Lausch and P Dani Koltz had run scoring hits for the Red Foxes off Iona starter
Sarah Jackson. It was all Jackson would allow in the contest, as Marist put up only two hits across the rest of the contest.
The Gaels would quickly respond in the bottom of the innings as they put six runs on the board. Freshman DP
Eileen McCann opened the inning with a single and James followed with a double. Junior LF
Erin Kyle walked to load the bases. McCann would score on a wild pitch to tie the contest as Gettins walked to load the bases once again. Junior 2B
Tessa Earley reached on an error to push another Iona run across. Freshman SS
Marisa Newman singled home two more runs for Iona. Freshman CF
Jodi Petersen and McCann would each drive in runs with RBI singles to push the momentum back in the Gaels' favor.
Iona would add more runs in the fifth and sixth as Gettins drove in Kyle with an RBI hit in the fifth and James and Kyle provided run scoring hits in the sixth inning to push the game to the 10-2 final. In the circle, Jackson allowed two runs and six hits while striking out nine batters.
In game two, Iona got on the board in the third inning when Petersen led off with the first home run hit at Rice Oval this season to put Iona up 1-0. James singled and Kyle doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Gettins responded by driving in a run with a sacrifice fly.
In the fifth inning, Petersen and McCann led off with two straight singles and were driven in by a double off the bat of James. Kyle followed with her second two bagger of the game to put Iona up 5-0.
The Gaels were led in the circle by sophomore
Deanne Algeo, who pitched her second complete game shutout in as many days. Algeo allowed just three hits by Marist en route to her third win of the season.
