STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Iona College women's water polo team split a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contests Sunday in matches hosted by Wagner. In game one, the Gaels were up ended by Marist 13-10, but were able to recover to defeat Villanova 17-11.
Against Marist, the Gaels were unable to come back after the Red Foxes opened the contest with six goals in the first quarter. Freshman
Alyssa Turza had three goals and drew three kickouts while adding a steal on the defensive end. Junior
Maggie Wood had three goals and drew three kickouts and had four steals. Sophomore
Mackenzie Mone had two goals while classmate
Cecilia Leonard also had a goal. Junior
Sam Cody had an assist and a field block. Junior
Kathleen Link had seven saves in net.
Against Villanova, Iona led throughout, posting leads of 5-3 after one quarter and 11-6 at half en route to their third win of the weekend. Turza had six goals, drew four kickouts and posted two steals. Wood had four goals, four kickouts drawn and picked up three steals. Sophomore
Caitlin McGregor had two goals and two steals while Mone had two goals and a steal. Senior
Meghan Keller had a goal and two assists while freshman
Lauren Scheetz had a goal and an assist. Freshman
Juliana Kiesselbach made eight saves and had two steals in the win.
Iona, the number two seed in the MAAC Championships, will take on Wagner in the first round next weekend.
