EAST ORANGE, NJ - The Iona College softball team dropped a pair of contests in a non-conference double header with Seton Hall Thursday afternoon. The Gaels fell in game one 9-1 and in game two by a score of 4-1.
In game one, the Gaels got on the board in the top of the second inning. Freshman DP
Beth Kann opened up the inning with her second home run of the season to put the Gaels ahead 1-0. The Iona offense would stall the rest of the game as it was the last hit surrendered by Seton Hall pitching.
The Pirates tied the score in the bottom half of the third on a Nalin Bennett run scoring single to drive in freshman Jeanette Ragucci.
Sophomore Laura Canulli gave the Pirates a 4-1 advantage with a three-run homer to straightaway center field in the fourth. Seton Hall would put five runs across in the fifth to close the game at the 9-1 final.
Ashley Forsyth picked up the win for Seton Hall after throwing four innings. For Iona, sophomore
Sarah Jackson fell to 12-5 with the loss, as she allowed five hits and two earned runs in three innings of work.
In the second inning of game two, Hammer gave the Pirates their first run on a ground out, and Cashel Gaffey singled home a run. Gaffey delivered once again in the fourth inning with a single to rightfield to extend the cushion to 3-0. Seton Hall scored one run in the sixth to move the score to 4-0.
Seton Hall starter Hannah Hill took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, despite walking three. With one out, junior
Alyssa Maiese blasted a solo homerun to end the no-hit bid, but that would be all the Gaels could muster offensively. Maiese took the loss for Iona, allowing four runs, three earned, in six innings of work.
Iona travels to Fairfield this Saturday for a MAAC double header beginning at 1:00 pm.
