FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona College softball team took two contests from Fairfield in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference double header Saturday afternoon at Alumni Softball Field. The Gaels took game one by the score of 10-0 before winning game two 5-2.
In game one, the Gaels broke through with a five run second inning. Freshman DP

Allyssa James each singled to open the frame. Junior
Tierney Markou pinch ran for James and promptly stole second to put runners at second and third. A wild pitch on a third strike allowed McCann to score and junior LF
Erin Kyle to reach. With one out, Markou scored on a wild pitch and sophomore 3B
Chelsea Sheehan doubled to drive in Kyle to put Iona up 3-0. Sophomore RF
Melanie Hay would single to put two runners on and both were driven in on junior 2B
Tessa Earley's triple to put Iona ahead 5-0.
James would add to the lead in the third when she launched her third home run of the season to put Iona ahead six. The Gaels would close out the scoring in the sixth. Earley and freshman SS
Marisa Newman each had singles before freshman CF
Jodi Petersen drove in Earley with one of her own. James collected another RBI with a run scoring single that brought home pinch runner
Amy Metcalfe. Pinch hitter
Courtney Christie would produce another run when he drove in a run with a fielder's choice. The tenth Iona run would come across on an RBI hit by Sheehan.
In the circle, sophomore
Sarah Jackson picked up her 13th win of the season, going all six innings for Iona. Jackson allowed just four hits, walked two and struck out nine batters.
In game two, Iona would get on the board in the third inning. Newman doubled to lead off the inning. Petersen singled and stole second. With two runners in scoring position, McCann drove in two with an RBI single to put Iona ahead 2-0. A single by James would move McCann to third and another single, this time from Kyle, drove McCann home with the third Iona run. Fairfield would score twice in the bottom of the inning to cut the Iona lead to one.
In the sixth, Iona would gain some breathing room. Junior P
Alyssa Maiese led off with a single and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Earley. Petersen would double Maiese in to put Iona ahead two. Petersen was later driven in by an RBI single from James.
In relief of Iona starter
Deanne Algeo, Maiese took the win after throwing 4.2 innings of shutout ball. Maiese allowed four hits, walked one batter and struck out five.
Iona is back in action Tuesday when they host
