RIVERDALE, NY - The Iona College baseball team dropped a three-game series to Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Van Cortlandt Park. The Jaspers took the series 19-3, 7-1 and 10-2.
On Friday, sophomore DH James Beck went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the opener. His two-run single in the sixth inning capped the three-run inning for the Gaels. Rookie CF Anthony Muccio had two hits in the loss. Rookie RHP Pete Ladis (0-5) took the loss.
In the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, Iona scored its lone run in the second inning on sophomore 1B Mike Chiaravalloti's ninth home run of the season with two out in the frame. Beck posted two more hits in the contest.
In the nightcap, the Gaels could not over come a seven-run first inning by Manhattan in the 10-2 defeat. Senior LF Andrew Passerelle blasted his team-leading 13th home run of the season in the opening frame. Passerelle stands 11 hits shy of 200 for his career with three games remaining in the season. Sophomore RF Colin Lyall went 2-for-3 for the Maroon & Gold.
Iona concludes the 2010 campaign next weekend at Salesian Field when they host Rider on Friday and Saturday.
