Huntington, WV - The Iona College women's soccer team completed half of its run at the Best Western Huntington Mall Invitational hosted by Marshall University with a first round contest against Appalachian State. The Gaels were dealt their second straight one-goal loss with a 1-0 defeat.
With the clock expiring on a mostly scoreless first half, the Mountaineers slipped in the only goal of the day on a 44th minute tally by Sam Neil. Kara Buono crossed the ball from the left side, then it was tapped by Michelle Jewell at the far end and finally sent into the net by Neil past Gael freshman goalkeeper
Jacquelyn Gates.
Although held scoreless, the Maroon & Gold was even with Appalachian State at ten shots apiece and led 5-4 in shots on goal. Gates added two saves to her career total in the first half, as
Trista Rivera took over for the second half and had one save.
The Gaels resume action in the tournament on Sunday (Sep. 5) in a noon match-up against Radford.
