BUFFALO, NY - The Iona College men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up competition at the 2011 MAAC Championships in Buffalo, NY Thursday. After the first day, the men are fourth with 121 points, while the women are fifth with 103 points.
The Loyola men lead after scoring 209 points, while second-place Rider registered 196 points. Marist College is in third with 164 points, followed by Iona (121), Canisius College (113), Niagara University (104), Saint Peter's College (103), Fairfield University (80) and Manhattan College (38).
On the women's side, Marist has tallied 247 points, while Rider stands in second place (171.5). Loyola is in third with 145 points, followed by Siena College (138.5), Iona (103), Niagara (101), Fairfield (95), Canisius (87), Saint Peter's (36) and Manhattan (32).
In the championship final of the 500 yard free,
Justin Grigull was fourth in the event with a time of 4:38.17, picking up 15 points for the Gaels.
Joseph De Leone was third in the consolation final (11th overall) with a time of 4:43.50, good for six points.
Chris Yacobacci was fifth in the championship final of the 200 yard IM, picking up 14 points with a time of 1:54.14.
Ryan Bacci was fifth in the consolation final (13th overall) with a time of 1:57.43, good for four points.
Tyler Elfert was eighth (16th overall), securing one point with a time of 2:00.06.
In the 50 yard freestyle, Tasman took fourth in the championship final, finishing with a time of 21.07, earning 15 points. Porrazzo was second in the consolation final (10th overall) with a time of 21.48. Hudson was eighth (16th overall) with a time of 21.94, picking up one point.
In the 400 yard medley relay, the relay of Porrazzo, Yacobacci, Tasman and Grigull picked up 28 points with a fifth place finish, touching the wall with a time of 3:27.66.
In the consolation final of the 500 yard freestyle,
Kara Nowakowski took fourth in the heat (12th in the event) with a time of 5:11.50.
Brigitte Doughty was eighth in the heat (16th overall), finishing with a time of 5:17.01.
In the 200 yard IM,
Maria Skeivys took third in the consolation final (11th overall in the event) with a time of 2:11.93. Manser was fifth in the heat (13th overall) with a time of 2:11.98.
Harvey took seventh in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.48, picking up 12 points for the Gaels. In the consolation final, Mone was second in the heat (10th overall) with a time of 24.72 to help secure seven points for the Gaels.
In one meter diving,
Briana Gongloff was first in the consolation final (ninth overall) picking up 186.70 points to secure nine points for the Gaels.
Melanie Dilascio was eighth in the consolation final (16th overall) with 140.20 points.
In the 400 yard medley relay, the relay of Skeivys, Manser,
Sam Cody and Harvey took fourth, setting a new Iona record with a time of 3:54.09 and picking up 30 points for the team.
The second day of the MAAC Championships begins Friday at 10:00 am.
