GAELS MAINTAIN PLACES AFTER DAY TWO

BUFFALO, NY - The Iona College men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued competition at the 2011 MAAC Championships Friday at the in Buffalo. After the completion of 30 events, the Iona men remained in fourth place with 296.5 points while the Iona women remained in fifth place with 264 points.

The Loyola men maintained the lead with 567 points, while Rider University has registered 386.5 points for second place.  Marist College is in third with 370 points, followed by Iona (296.5), Canisius College (272.5), Saint Peter's College (250), Niagara University (194), Fairfield University (139.5) and Manhattan College (90).

On the women's side, the Marist has tallied 607 points, while Rider sits in second place with 393 points.  Loyola is in third with 346.5 points, followed by Siena College (330), Iona (264), Fairfield (235), Niagara (226.5), Canisius (207), Saint Peter's (104) and Manhattan (64).

In the women's 200 yard medley relay, the relay of Maria Skeivys, Jamie Manser, Sophia Hyokyvaara and Mackenzie Mone took third in the event with a time of 1:46.30, picking up 32 points for the Gaels. In the men's swim, the relay of Ralph Porrazzo, Chris Yacobacci, Tyler Elfert and Seth Tasman repeated the women's team effort with a third place finish in the event. The quartet finished with a time of 1:34.46, also securing 32 points for Iona.

In the 1000 yard freestyle, Kara Nowakowski took ninth with a time of 10:37.42 in the event, picking up nine points. Brigitte Doughty was 12th in the event, picking up five points with a time of 10:47.76.

In the men's 1000 yard freestyle, Nick Kotonias picked up 12 points with a seventh place finish, touching the wall with a time of 9:47.21. The next Iona finishers fell just short of picking up points as Zach Benoit took 17th in the event with a time of 10:01.87 and Raymond Joyal took 18th with a time of 10:08.70.

Kotonias picked up another 12 points with a seventh place finish in the 400 yard IM, finishing with a time of 4:11.13. Ryan Bacci was 12th with a time of 4:13.49, good for another five points.

Sam Cody was the top finisher for the Gaels in the 100 yard fly, taking 10th and picking up seven points with a time of 59.27. Theresa Harvey was 15th with a time of 1:00.41, picking up two points.

In the men's 100 yard fly, Tasman picked up 12 points, finishing seventh with a time of 52.00. Elfert took ninth in the event with a time of 51.86, good for another nine points. Patrick O'Reilly was 16th with a time of 53.60, gaining another point for the Gaels.

Mone was the top finisher in the 200 yard freestyle, taking seventh with a time of 1:54.74. In the men's event, Justin Grigull was second with a time of 1:41.94, picking up 17 points. Joseph De Leone was ninth with a time of 1:44.89, good for nine points to the Iona total.

In her preliminary heats of the 100 yard breaststroke, Jamie Manser broke the MAAC Record with a time of 1:03.41 and was one of five Iona swimmers to advance to the finals of the event. In the finals of the event, Manser was once again at the top, taking first with a time of 1:03.86. Kerri-Anne Dodenhoff was fifth with a time of 1:07.32, picking up 14 points. Sarah Walker took eighth with a time of 1:07.45, earning 11 points. Hyokyvaara was 11th with a time of 1:09.21 (six points) and Zuzanna Michalak was 16th with a time of 1:11.52 (one point).

In the men's 400 yard IM, Yacobacci took fourth with a time of 56.83, earning 15 points. Matthew Stelnicki earned 4.5 points with a 12th place tie, touching the wall with a time of 59.07. Chris Giovine was 16th with a time of 1:00.65.

In the 100 yard backstroke, Kelsie Johnson was 11th in the event with a time of 59.86, good for six points. Skeivys was 14th in the event, with a time of 1:00.29, picking up three points.

In the men's event, Porrazzo was sixth with a time of 51.97, good for 13 points. Mark Wallace was 12th in the event, with a time of 53.67 and earning five points. 

In women's three meter diving, Briana Gongloff was 12th with 159.75 points, earning five points for the Gaels.

In the 800 yard freestyle relay, the relay of Harvey, Doughty, Caitlin McGregor and Mone was fifth with a time of 7:51.51, earning 28 points. In the men's event, the Gaels' relay of De Leone, Grigull, Lee Stiles and Yacobacci was fifth with a time of 6:55.44, picking up 28 points.
