BUFFALO, NY - The Iona College men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed competition Saturday at the 2011 MAAC Championships. The Gaels both held on to their place from the previous two days as the men finished in fourth for the second time in three years while the women took fifth for the second consecutive season.
The Loyola men won this year's MAAC crown with a total of 796 points, while Rider registered 593.5 points for second place. Marist College came in third with 563 points, followed by Iona (423.5), Canisius College (411.5), Saint Peter's College (355), Niagara University (284), Fairfield University (193.5) and Manhattan College (129).
On the women's side, Marist earned the conference crown as the Red Foxes tallied 843 points, while Rider finished in second place (566). Loyola came in third with 499.5 points, followed by Siena College (462), Iona (384), Fairfield (321), Niagara (258.5), Canisius (256), Saint Peter's (143) and Manhattan (87).
In the women's 1650 yard freestyle,
Kara Nowakowski took fifth in the event final, earning 14 points with a time of 17:39.98.
Brigitte Doughty was 10th in the event, earning seven points with a time of 17:59.15.
Victoria Ponzo was 14th with a time of 18:09.25, earning Iona another three points.
In the men's 1650, the top Iona finalist was
Nick Kotonias, who finished 13th with a time of 16:39.17, earning four points.
Joseph De Leone took 16th in the event, earning another point for the Gaels with a time of 16:54.04.
In the women's 200 yard backstroke,
Maria Skeivys took 12th in the event, with a time of 2:09.52, good for five points.
Kelsie Johnson was 14th with a time of 2:09.99, earning another three points. In the men's event,
Ralph Porrazzo took sixth for Iona, touching the wall with a time of 1:55.59 earning 13 points.
The Gaels had four swimmers pick up points in the men's 100 yard freestyle.
Seth Tasman took second in the event, picking up 17 points with a time of 46.52.
Justin Grigull was a couple spots behind in fourth with a time of 46.93, earning 15 points.
Cameron Hudson was 12th with a time of 47.76, good for five points and
Graham Weir was 14th with a time of 48.01, earning three points.
In the women's 100 yard free,
Theresa Harvey was ninth with a time of 52.33, earning nine points.
Mackenzie Mone was 11th with a time of 53.26, picking up six points.
A day after setting a new standard in the 100 yard breaststroke,
Jamie Manser followed up her record performance with a third place finish in the 200 yard. She finished the event in a time of 2:21.99, picking up 16 points.
Sarah Walker was eighth with a time of 2:28.58 and
Sophia Hyokyvaara was 10th with a time of 2:29.12, picking up seven points.
In the men's 200 yard breaststroke,
Chris Yacobacci took third with a time of 2:03.39, good for 16 points.
Chris Giovine was seventh with a time of 2:10.23, earning Iona 12 points.
In the 200 yard butterfly,
Sam Cody took tenth for Iona with a time of 2:09.91, earning seven points.
Victoria Ponzo was 15th with a time of 2:14.99, earning two points. In the men's 200 yard fly,
Tyler Elfert was 10th with a time of 1:55.11, earning seven points.
Patrick O'Reilly was 15th with a time of 1:59.94, earning two points for the Gaels.
In the 400 yard freestyle relay, the squad of Harvey,
Kerri-Anne Dodenhoff, Doughty and
Mackenzie Mone took fourth with a time of 3:31.40, picking up 30 points. In the men's relay, the team of Porrazzo, Hudson, Grigull and Tasman took third with a time of 3:06.42, earning 32 points.
