BETHLEHEM, PA - The Iona College baseball team allowed the tying run in the eighth and winning run in the ninth in a tough 5-4 loss at Lehigh in non-conference action at Goodman Campus.
The Gaels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by junior 3B
Chris Burke and run scoring groundout by junior DH
James Beck. Lehigh knotted the score with a solo run in the bottom of the first and third innings.
Iona went ahead 3-2 in the fifth inning. Rookie LF
Joe Torres led off the inning with a walk. He scored from first on a single by
Nick Rossetti that was misplayed by the right fielder. Lehigh answered with an equalizer in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Maroon & Gold made it 4-3 in the seventh inning. With one out, Torres walked and stole second base. He was pushed over to third base on a groundout and scored on an RBI single by Burke.
Solo runs in the eighth and ninth innings led to the Gaels' demise. Lehigh won the game on a walk-off double by Brendan McGaheran.
Senior LHP
Justin Wiley tossed six innings allowing six hits and had one strikeout in the no decision. Sophomore RHP
Matt Marley was charged with two runs in two innings of relief.
Burke and sophomore CF
Anthony Muccio had two hits a piece in the loss. Torres reached base three times with a hit and two walks while scoring twice. He also had two stolen bases.
The Gaels continue a four-game series with Lehigh with a single-game beginning at 1:00 pm tomorrow (Mar. 19).
