Lacrosse Keeps it Close Against Oregon

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - With a chance for the Gaels to tie the game on their final possession, a key save by Oregon goalkeeper Caroline Federighi on a shot by Elizabeth Coholan relegated the Iona College lacrosse team (2-6) to an 8-7 defeat against the Ducks (4-3) in non-conference action at a wet Mazzella Field.

Coholan, along with Brenna Lade and Caitlyn Collins, had two goals in the loss while Emily Taddei added one.  Collins opened the day's scoring with an unassisted tally in the ninth minute to give Iona a 1-0 lead.  Oregon's Jess Drummond tied it up just shy of two minutes later with help from Bina Barrett.  The Gaels responded by once again taking the lead, this time on a goal by Coholan assisted by Casey Scully.

The visiting Ducks then netted three straight to pull out to a 4-2 advantage with 54 seconds left in the first half.  Coholan notched her second marker of the afternoon with 19 seconds to go and reduced the margin to 4-3 at halftime.

Oregon struck first in the second half, leading by two after an Alex Breiner goal in the 35th minute.  Iona rallied to tie the contest at 5-all on back-to-back unassisted goals by Lade and tied it once more at 6-all with a Taddei tally, assisted by Kylie Gregory, with 16:30 remaining in the game.  The Ducks broke open the deadlock scoring twice in a two minute span to lead 8-6 with under ten minutes to go.  Collins scored from free position in the 54th minute to make the score 8-7.

The game came down to the wire as Iona had one last chance to tie with the seconds winding down.  After forcing an Oregon turnover, Coholan was fouled outside of the 12 meter fan, but was denied on the final shot attempt of the afternoon.

The Gaels led 21-13 in shots, 19-15 in ground balls, and 9-7 in draw controls.  Iona was 12-for-13 on clear attempts while Oregon was 11-for-16.  Angela Grous picked up a game-high four ground balls and Coholan led all players with four draw controls.  Goalie Maria Ortiz made five saves in front of the net while Federighi and Salliebeth Finnegan combined for six saves for the Ducks.

Iona continues its three-game home stand on Mar. 23, hosting UC Davis at 3:00 pm.
