ARLINGTON, VA - The Iona College baseball team earned its first victory of the season in a 6-1 win at George Washington. Senior LHP
Justin Wiley scattered six hits and allowed one run in 7.2 innings of work to earn the victory.
The Gaels scored twice in each of the first two innings to take an early 4-0 advantage. Junior C
James Beck drove in the first run with a double-down the line that scored sophomore SS
Matthew Kriss from second base. Junior 3B
Chris Burke picked up an RBI with an infield hit in the squad's next turn at bat.
A sac fly by senior 2B
Nick Rossetti drove in the Gaels fourth run. Rookie LF
Joe Torres would score on an error later in the frame.
Iona tacked on two more in the fifth inning. A fielder's choice off the bat of Burke drove home Rossetti and a triple into the right-centerfield gap by Torres would plate Burke to account for the Gaels scoring.
The Colonials got their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a fielder's choice.
Beck and Burke each had two hits in the contest. Burke drove in two and scored a run.
Wiley (1-1) struck out five batters in his 7.2 innings. Sophomore RHP
Kenny Dietrich did not allow a base runner and had two strikeouts in 1.1 innings to close out the contest.
Iona and George Washington meet again tomorrow at Barcroft Park to complete the three-game set between the two squads in a doubleheader beginning at noon. The third game of the series was originally scheduled for Sunday but has been moved up due to a forecast of rain. The Gaels will roll out freshman LHP
Eddie Macaluso and sophomore RHP
Thomas Kriss to start each end of the doubleheader; the first game stretching nine innings before a seven-inning nightcap.
