Gaels Prevail In Marathon Doubleheader With Niagara

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College softball team was able to capture a sweep of a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contests over Niagara Saturday afternoon at Rice Oval. In game one, the Gaels defeated the Purple Eagles 4-1 before winning a marathon 13 inning affair 9-6.

In the opener, the Gaels broke through with the contest's first runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore CF Jodi Petersen led off with a home run to center field on the first pitch of the inning from Niagara starter Kim Bryson. With one out, freshman RF Katie Jansson doubled to right field. With two out, junior 1B Allyssa James singled to center field, driving in Jansson with the second run of the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Niagara would cut the Iona lead to one after an RBI single from third baseman Kayla Hines brought in second baseman Theresa Healey, who reached base earlier with a one out walk.

The Gaels would push two insurance runs across in the bottom of the frame. With two out, senior C Melanie Gettins singled to left field. James would then deliver another run scoring hit, this time a home run down the right field line to give Iona a 4-1 lead that would stand.

Junior Sarah Jackson picked up the win, her seventh of the season. She went the full seven, allowing five hits and one run while striking out 12 batters. Bryson took the loss for Niagara, falling to 7-5 on the year.

In game two, the Gaels and Purple Eagles would remain scoreless until the top of the fifth inning. Designated player Gabrielle Lustrinelli doubled in right fielder Alexis Wayne with the first run of the contest. Shortstop Maggie McDonald followed with a home run to right center as Niagara jumped out to 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Iona would score three of their own to tie the contest. Junior SS Deanne Algeo would reach on an error to lead off the inning. With sophomore LF Eileen McCann at the dish, Algeo would move to second on a wild pitch before McCann singled to put runners on the corners. Petersen would ground into a double play, plating the first Iona run and clearing the bases. Senior P Alyssa Maiese singled and Jansson followed with a home run just over the left field fence to tie the game at three.

The Gaels would take the lead in their next at bat. James led off with a double and was run for by sophomore Cari Anderson. Anderson moved to third on a bunt by junior 3B Chelsea Sheehan and pinch hitter Marisa Newman reached on a walk. Algeo followed with a fielder's choice, plating Anderson to put Iona ahead 4-3. McCann followed with a home run to left field to put Iona ahead 6-3.

Down to their final out, Niagara rallied to send the game to extra innings. With two out, Lustrinelli walked and McDonald singled up the middle. Maiese would be removed in favor of Jackson. Center fielder Kristin Sito then hit a three run home run to knot the game at six.

The Gaels would strand six runners on base during their at bats from the seventh to the twelth before breaking through in the 13th. With one out, Maiese tripled to center over a drawn in outfield. Jansson walked and stole second. Gettins would follow, launching her second home run of the season to right center and bringing the game to its 9-6 final.

Jackson picked up her second win of the day, and eighth of the year, pitching 6.1 innings of relief, allowing three hits and one run while striking out 11. Maiese went the first 6.2 innings, allowing five hits and five runs while striking out nine.
