NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College softball team continued their strong showing this weekend with a sweep of Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader. In game one, the Gaels pulled out a 5-1 victory before shutting out the Griffs 5-0 in the second game.
In the game one, the Griffs got on the board in the top of the third. With two out, right fielder Lauren Falzone reached with an infield single to the left side. Center fielder Lizzy Gatto followed with a singled down the left field line scoring Falzone with the afternoon's first run.
The Gaels would come right back in the home half of the inning with two runs. With one out, senior 2B

Deanne Algeo followed with a single up the middle. After a ground out moved the runners into scoring position, sophomore CF
Jodi Petersen dropped a single into shallow right field to bring in the two runners and give Iona the 2-1 lead.
The Gaels pushed their lead to two in the bottom of the fifth when Algeo hit a 1-0 pitch from Canisius starter Caroline Main over the right centerfield fence for her fourth round tripper of the season.
The Gaels would put the final two runs across in the sixth. Senior C
Melanie Gettins led off with a single to left. With one out, junior 3B
Chelsea Sheehan reached on a bunt single before Earley reached in the same fashion. With two out and the bases still loaded, sophomore LF
Eileen McCann hit a ground rule double to right center, scoring Gettins and Sheehan with the final Iona runs of the game.

Sarah Jackson got the win for Iona, allowing six hits and one earned run, while striking out seven, in seven innings of work. Jackson moved her 2011 record to 9-6 with the win. Main took the loss for Canisius, allowing ten hits and five earned runs in six innings, falling to 6-7 on the year.
In the game two, the Gaels cracked the scoreboard for the first time in the second. Freshman RF
Katie Jansson doubled to left center and moved to third on a ground out to the right side. With two out, Sheehan reached on a Canisius error that scored Jansson and put Iona ahead 1-0.
After getting only one runner on from the third to the fifth innings, the Gaels erupted for four runs in the sixth. With one out, McCann singled up the middle before Petersen reached on an infield single to the left side. Senior P
Alyssa Maiese singled up the middle to drive in McCann, with Petersen and Maiese moving into scoring position on the throw to the plate. Jansson doubled to right to plate Petersen with the second run of the inning. Gettins followed with a single to right to score pinch runner

Marisa Newman would walk, and as ball four got away from the plate, Jansson scored the final Iona run of the day.
Maiese silenced the Griffs' bats in the finale, scattering just four hits and three walks while striking out six. Maiese now sits at 5-7 on the season while Canisius starter Jen Consaul took the loss, falling to 4-3 on the year.
The Gaels are back in action Thursday, when they travel to Stony Brook for a midweek doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
