STONY BROOK, NY - The Iona College softball team stretched their winning to seven with a pair of non-conference wins over Stony Brook Thursday afternoon. In game one, the Gaels defeated the Seawolves 7-0 before taking game two 5-1.
In game one, after only getting one base runner on in the first two innings, the Gaels exploded for three runs in the top of the third. Junior 3B
Chelsea Sheehan led off with a single. With one out, junior SS
Deanne Algeo singled to put runners on the corners. With sophomore LF
Eileen McCann at the plate, Algeo stole second with a Stony Brook error allowing her to move to third and Sheehan score on the play. McCann would singled up the middle to drive in Algeo with the Gaels' second run. McCann would steal second before sophomore CF
Jodi Petersen singled to right center to drive in McCann with the third Iona run.
In the fourth, Iona would score another run when McCann drove in Sheehan with a bases loaded walk. The Gaels put across a run in their at bat in the fifth. A one out fielder's choice put senior C
Melanie Gettins on first. Junior 1B Alyssa James followed with a single to center. Sheehan would push Gettins home with a double to left center and Iona was ahead 5-0.
The Gaels wrapped up their scoring in the seventh with two more runs. With one out, James reached on a fielder error before pinch hitter
Cari Anderson walked. After a fielder's choice erased James, Algeo singled to right to score Anderson before a wild pitch score senior 2B

Sarah Jackson went the four innings for the Gaels, picking up her tenth win of the season. Jackson allowed one hit and one walk while striking out seven in her four innings before handing the ball off to senior
Alyssa Maiese, who went three innings and allowed just one hit and one walk.
In the nightcap, the Gaels fell behind as the Seawolves put across a run in the bottom of the first. With one out, Alyssa Hawley singled. After moving to second, Hawley scored after an Iona error allowed Chain to reach on a fielder's choice.
The Gaels would come back to tie the contest in the top of the second. With one out, freshman C
Katie Jansson doubled to left center. After Jansson moved to third on a passed ball, James would double to left field to drive in the rookie with the Gaels' first run.
The Gaels took the lead for good with a run in the third. Sheehan led off with a double to left center. With two out and Sheehan on third, Petersen drove in her second run of the day with a RBI single to left field.
The Gaels would cap their scoring for the day with a three run fifth. With one out, senior LF
Erin Kyle reached on a Stony Brook error before Sheehan was hit up a 1-0 pitch to put runners on first and second. Algeo would double to left to drive in Kyle with the Gaels' third run. McCann would drive in Sheehan after reaching on a fielder's choice. McCann would steal second before Petersen walked. Maiese would drive Algeo with a single to right with McCann being thrown out at home at the plate before the Gaels could put another run across the plate.
Maiese picked up the win after pitching four innings of one hit relief. Algeo got the start, going three innings and allowing four hits and one walk. Colleen Matthes took the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, in seven innings for the Seawolves.
The Gaels return to MAAC action Saturday when they travel to Jersey City to take on Saint Peter's, Game one of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 pm.
