POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The 20th ranked Iona College women's water polo team opened up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition Saturday with a pair of contests hosted by Marist College. In game one, the Gaels defeated Siena 18-13 before topping St. Francis (NY) 14-5 in the second contest of the day.
A game after breaking the single game goal record with eight against Wagner, senior
Maggie Wood set the single game scoring record with 12 points, scoring seven times and dishing out five assists. She drew three kickouts and picked up three steals in another spectacular performance. Junior
Cecilia Leonard had six points with a three goal, three assist effort. She also drew two kickouts and had two steals. Junior
Mackenzie Mone had four goals and two assists, along with a team high four steals. Sophomore
Alyssa Turza had two goals and an assist while freshmen
Amy Olsen and
Erika Lauraitis had one goal apiece. Sophomore
Lauren Scheetz had two steals on the defensive end. Senior
Kathleen Link had 13 saves in net for the Maroon & Gold.
"We played poorly defensively in the first half," said head coach
Brian Kelly. "That a huge credit to the offensive ability of Siena. But when it mattered most, we were able to slow them down and start off the MAAC slate with a win.
In game two with Saint Francis (NY), the Gaels held the Terriers scoreless until the fourth frame. Leonard had nine points on five goals and four assists. She also drew two kickouts and had three steals in the contest. Mone had four goals and two assists, with a steal and a field block on defense. Wood had three goals and three assists. Turza had a goal and an assist while Olsen and Lauraitis each had a goal and drew a kickout. Freshman
Hannah Cross had the final Iona tally. Link had 15 stops, two steals and three assists.
"We played a great defensive effort against a good offensive team," commented Kelly. "We look forward to a chance to pick up more crucial conference victories tomorrow."
The Gaels travel to Loudonville, NY tomorrow for a pair of MAAC games, taking on Marist at 10:30 am before facing off with Villanova at 3:00 pm.
