Clutch Hitting, Pitching Helps Gaels Sweep Broncs On The Road

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Iona College softball team resumed Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Rider at Herb and Joan Young Field. The Gaels used a trio of two run innings and nine strikeouts from junior P Sarah Jackson to win game one 6-0. In game two, a two run single by junior SS Deanne Algeo in the fifth inning pushed across the winning runs in a 2-1 victory.

In game one, the Gaels cracked the scoreboard for the first time of the day. Sophomore CF Jodi Petersen led off with a walk and senior DP alyssa Maiese followed with her seventh home run of the season to left. In the fifth, Algeo plated junior 1B Allyssa James and senior 2B Tessa Earley with a single to left field. The Gaels finished their scoring for the contest in the sixth. After a one out walk to Maiese, senior C Melanie Gettins followed two batters later with a double to left center. James, the next batter for the Maroon & Gold, singled to left center to plate sophomore PR Cari Anderson and senior PR Tierney Markou with the fifth and sixth Iona tallies.

Jackson moved to 11-6 on the year with her seven innings of shutout pitching. She allowed just four hits and one walk to go along with nine punch outs.

In game two, the Broncs got on the board in the top off the first when C Sam Pugh drove in 3B Alyssa Paul with a single to right field.

The Gaels only reached base once in their first four at bats before breaking through the deciding runs in the fifth. Algeo plated Markou and junior 3B Chelsea Sheehan with a single through the left side to put Iona ahead for good.

Maiese settled down after the first, as she allowed just one hit and one walk through her next six innings. She struck out four in the contest to boost her record to 10-7.

Maiese and Jackson are the first Iona pitching duo to reach double digit wins in a season since 2005 when Alison Higgs (18-7) and Becky Riccitelli (13-2) each passed the ten win mark for the Gaels.

The Gaels are back in action Tuesday when they return to New Jersey to take Saint Peter's in MAAC action. Game one of the doubleheader begins at 3:00 pm.
