Fourth-seeded Iona College softball team took a 4-3 victory over second-seeded Manhattan College in game four of the 2011 MAAC Softball Championship at Softball Park at Gartland Field on the campus of Marist College.
The Jaspers got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning, with a two-RBI single by junior right fielder Jen Keller.
The Gaels tied things up in bottom of the second as freshman right fielder
Katie Jansson knocked a solo home run to right center field and junior third baseman
Chelsea Sheehan singled to center field to bring in junior first baseman Alyssa James
Manhattan gained the lead once again in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from senior left fielder Monica Evangelista to go ahead, 3-2. Iona's
Alyssa Maiese led off the sixth inning with a home run to left center, her second of the tournament, to tie up the game again at 3-3.
The winning run came in the bottom of the seventh when Sheehan scored as junior shortstop
Deanne Algeo reached first on a throwing error.
Maiese pitched six innings for Iona, giving up four hits and recording four strikeouts, and
Sarah Jackson earned the win and improved to 14-8 on the mound. Erika Sullivan went five innings for Manhattan while Ashley Rampino ended the season at 7-10.
Iona will play Marist in Game 5 at approximately 3:00 p.m. today.
