LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Iona College softball team continued their winning ways with a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference sweep of Siena College Saturday afternoon on the road. In game one, the Gaels defeated the Saints 7-2 before a walk off home run led the Maroon & Gold to a 4-3 win in eight innings in the nightcap.
Siena would go ahead in the first in game one, scoring a pair of runs. After third baseman Samantha Ray reached on an Iona error, shortstop Shannon Jones would drive her in on a single to center field. Siena put another run across when Jones scored on another Iona error at the plate.
In the top of the third, Iona took the lead for good with three runs. After a one out walk to senior 2B

Deanne Algeo followed with a double to right center to put runners on second and third. Sophomore LF
Eileen McCann would drive the pair in with a double to left, tying the game at two. With McCann on third, senior DP
Alyssa Maiese drove in what turned out to be the game winning run with a triple down the right field line.
The Gaels would cement the win with a four run sixth inning. Sophomore CF
Jodi Petersen walked to lead off the inning before Maiese followed with a single. The two would move to second and third on a strikeout and Maiese was lifted for senior pinch runner

Melanie Gettins would bring in Petersen with a single to left field. Gettins and Markou would score when junior 1B
Allyssa James launched her second home run of the season to right and put Iona ahead by the 7-0 final.
After the shaky first, junior
Sarah Jackson settled down to pick up her 13th win of the season. Jackson allowed the two unearned runs while striking out 15. Jessika-Jo Sandrini took the loss for Siena, going the first 5.1 innings, allowing seven earned runs.
In game two, the Saints got out to a quick start with a run in the first. Designated player Mandy Ferro singled to left to drive in Stefanie Sueda, who pinch ran after Sandrini reached on an error to lead off the inning.
The Gaels would knot the contest in the third. McCann walked to lead off the frame. With McCann on third after a pass ball and ground out, freshman RF
Katie Jansson reached on an outfield error to score McCann.
The Gaels took the lead with a two run fifth. McCann singled to lead off the inning and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Petersen. Maiese would drive in the go ahead run with a double to right. With Markou on second for Maiese, Jansson put runners on the corners with an infield single. Markou would then score on a passed ball.
Siena cut the lead to one in their half of the fifth. Ferro would reach on an error and moved to third when Sceppaguerci reached on an error. With runners on second and third, Powlowsky grounded out to short to score Ferro with the unearned run.
Siena tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Ferro moved to second on a single by second baseman Alyssa Sceppaguerci and scored on a single by catcher Nastasha Powlowsky. With the winning run at third, the Gaels were able to keep the game going when they induced a 1-1-5 double play to end the inning.
The Gaels would put the winning run across in the eighth. With one out, McCann homered to left and put Iona ahead for good. Maiese went the full eight for Iona, allowing three runs, one earned, while striking out five for her 12th win of the year. Amanda Filippazzo took the loss for Siena, going eight innings and allowing four runs, three earned.
The Gaels, winners of 17 of their last 18 games, moved to 11-3 in conference play and secured a berth in next weekend's MAAC Championship in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Iona ends its regular season tomorrow when they host Manhattan at Rice Oval. Game one begins at 1:00 pm.
