STONY BROOK, NY - Senior
Kerrie Deignan registered the first Iona goal of the season, and the sixth of her career, to give the Iona College women's soccer team a 1-0 first half lead in the team's 2011 road opener at Stony Brook. The Seawolves came from behind in the second half, scoring twice in a span of 3:35 to claim a 2-1 victory.
Despite trailing 9-3 in shots over the first period, the Maroon & Gold went into the break with a 1-0 edge thanks to a wonder strike from Deignan in the 21st minute. Deignan took a feed from
Nicole Paulucci and curled a left-footed shot just inside the left post to push the visitors in front. The assist was a career-first for Paulucci.
Stony Brook battled back in the second half and equalized when Caitlin Pfeiffer slotted a shot inside the near post from ten yards out on the left wing. Sa'sha Kershaw provided the service to set up the goal, Pfeiffer's first as a Seawolf, at the 55:11 mark.
The Seawolves continued to press and found another breakthrough just over three minutes later. Taryn Schoenbeck cut open the Iona defense with a through-ball down the middle, unleashing Kershaw free on goal. The junior calmly lured out Iona keeper
Jacquelyn Gates, before tucking the ball inside the right post to put Stony Brook ahead for good.
Gates made nine saves in net, the second highest single-game total of her career, in the loss while Stony Brook goalie Chelsea Morales saved two. Deignan,
Leanne Benson, and
Chelsea Cabarcas each recorded a shot on goal for the Gaels.
The squad is back at home on Friday, Aug. 26, hosting NJIT at 3:00 pm at Mazzella Field.
