Women's Soccer Plays Second Straight to Overtime

NEW YORK, NY - Freshman Melissa Frederick scored the third goal of her career to tie the game, but it wasn't enought as the Iona College women's soccer team fell to columbia by a score of 2-1 in overtime at Columbia Soccer Stadium.

The Lions tallied the first goal of the match in the 24th minute, as Marissa Schultz connected with Coleen Rizzo off a corner kick to give Columbia its first score of the season and first lead of the match.

In the 58th minute, Iona came right back to knot the contest as Frederick cashed in on a Lion miscue in front of the net to put the game at 1-1. Frederick burst into the Columbia box and pounced on a smothered pass that went off the hands of goalkeeper Lillian Klein. The Gael would keep the momentum going for most of the second half, outshooting the Lions 9-3, but the two teams would fight to a scoreless draw the rest of the way in regulation.

Just 1:30 into overtime, Columbia's Lexi Nichols bullied her way to a loose ball in the six-yard box and got just enough of it to dribble it over the goal line and give the Lions a 2-1 victory.

The Gaels led 11-7 in shots over the match while both teams had five corner kicks.  Goalie Trista Rivera recorded one save for Iona, and Columbia's Klein saved four.

The Maroon & Gold is back in action at Rhode Island on Sep. 23.
