LONGWOOD, VA - The Iona College softball team suffered a pair of setbacks Sunday at the Longwood Spring Classic. In the opener, Iona fell to Quinnipiac 4-3 before losing to Longwood 1-0 in the weekend finale.
Quinnipiac got on the board in the first inning when Jordan Paolucci drove in Christy Cabrera with a double to right field off Iona starter
Alyssa Maiese.
The Gaels quickly answered, with a run in their first at bat. Junior CF
Jodi Petersen reached on an error to lead off. Petersen stole second and moved to third on a flyout. Maiese followed with a two out single to the left side to drive in Petersen with the first Iona run of the game.
The Gaels took the lead in the second when sophomore C
Katie Jansson drove in freshman
Carly Argyle with a two-run homer to left center field, her second of the season.
The score stayed at 3-1 until the top of the seventh. With one out in the seventh, and Paolucci and Mina Duffy on base, Nikki Barba doubled to left center, driving in Paolucci from second. Kortney Kesses then singled to right center for two RBI, including Duffy's game-winning run. Argyle received the loss after allowing three runs in 0.2 innings of relief.
In the finale of the day, the Gaels and the host Lancers played a tight one as senior
Sarah Jackson was locked up in a pitchers' duel with Longwood's Brooke Short.
Longwood got the only run of the contest in the home fourth. After a double by Megan Baltzell to right center, Kori Nishitomi advanced her to third on a sacrifice bunt. Short would then help her own cause and broke the scoreless with a single to right field.
Short pitched a complete-game for the Lancers, scattering four hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Jackson was the hard-luck recipient on the other side, yielding just two hits through 6.0 innings and the one earned run with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Gaels are back in action next weekend in Baltimore, MD, competing in four contests at the UMBC Tourney.
