POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College women's water polo team competed this weekend at the Marist Invitational, hosted by fellow MAAC competitor Red Foxes. On Saturday, the Gaels dropped a pair of matchups. Iona was unable to top ninth-ranked Michigan in the first game of the weekend, falling to the Wolverines 10-7 before suffering a 15-9 loss to number 16 Hartwick. On Sunday, the Gaels picked up a convincing 15-8 win over Gannon before ending the weekend with a 9-3 loss to Brown.
Tied at five at half, Michigan scored four goals in the third quarter and held the Gaels scoreless in the fourth to pull out the three goal win. Senior
Cecilia Leonard had three goals to lead Iona while sophomore
Amy Olsen had two goals and senior
Mackenzie Mone had one. Junior
Alyssa Turza also found the net once while sophomore
Marisa Gaynor made 11 saves.
Against Hartwick, Olsen led the Gaels with four goals while Leonard finished with two goals. Sophomore
Sarah Hanly, senior
Caitlin McGregor and Mone each one one goal. Gaynor had six saves in net for Iona.
Against Gannon, Iona led just by two, 3-1 after the first, but used a five goal second quarter to distance itself from the Golden Knights. Sophomore
Erika Lauraitis led the Gaels with five goals in the contest, including two in the second quarter. Mone had four goals for the Maroon & Gold, while McGregor had two goals. Leonard, Olsen, Turza and freshman
Monica Stiles each found the net once in the contest. Freshman
Devin Green made the start in net for the Gaels and stopped five shots.
Against Brown, Iona scored three goals in the first quarter and were held scoreless for the remaining 24 minutes of play. Mone found the net twice while Olsen had one goal. Gaynor made three saves.
Iona is back in action Wednesday, when they take on Santa Barbara in California in the first of seven games the Gaels will play on the west coast.
