SAN BERNADINO, CA - The Iona College women's water polo team secured two wins Saturday afternoon at the Lancer Invite. In game one, the Gaels topped Azusa Pacific 14-7 before beating Redlands 9-7.
Against Azusa, the Gaels used a 6-1 advantage in the first quarter to provide early distance from the Cougars. Senior
Cecilia Leonard had 10 points for Iona, on three goals and seven assists. Leonard also contributed five steals on defense. Sophomore
Amy Olsen had four goals, one assist and drew two kickouts. Senior
Mackenzie Mone had a complete game, with three goals, two assists, one steal and one field block. Sophomore
Erika Lauraitis had two goals, one assist and one steal while junior
Alyssa Turza and sophomore
Hannah Cross each had one goal. Sophomore
Marisa Gaynor had four saves in three quarters, while freshman
Devin Green had one save in the fourth.
Against Redlands, the Gaels had another strong start, outscoring the Bulldogs 4-1 in the first eight minutes. Olsen led the Gaels with three goals and picked up two steals. Leonard had one goal, two assists, three field blocks and two steals. Mone had one goal and three steals while Lauraitis had one goal, one assist and two steals. Turza had one goal and one assist. Gaynor made 12 saves in net, along with one steal.
The Gaels are back in action Sunday for two more games in California, beginning with a 1:00 pm contest against fourth ranked Arizona State.
