KINGSTON, RI - The Iona College baseball team could not erase a nine-run deficit in a 10-4 loss to Rhode Island at Bill Beck Field. The Gaels surrendered nine runs in the first four innings before getting on the board in each of the last three.
The Maroon & Gold played two in the seventh inning on a
Joe Smith infield single. Smith beat out a wide throw that allowed both
Eric Capowski and
Bobby Vitulano to score. The sophomore right fielder was credited with one RBI on the base hit.
In the eighth, senior C
James Beck reached on a base hit and then advanced to second on a passed ball. He would score a couple pitches later as senior LF
Colin Lyall laced a double into the gap for a run batted in. The Gaels had a chance for more in the frame but stranded the bases loaded.
With two out in the ninth inning, rookie PH
Jimmy Guiliano drew a walk. He stole second and was driven in by a Beck single to account for the Gaels third and final run.
Beck and Lyall had two hits a piece. Lyall doubled his double output of the season with two in the loss.
Rookie RHP
Steve Basile (1-1) took the loss tossing four innings. He was relieved by classmate
Rob Ambrosino who tossed three effective innigns allowing four baserunners in three innings pitched. Rookie
Kyle Warden tossed the final inning for the Gaels.
Iona is back in action on the road tomorrow when they take on Sacred Heart.
