Jackson Sets Wins Record In SB Split With SBU

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Senior hurler Sarah Jackson picked up her record breaking 52nd career win in the Iona College softball team's 6-1 victory over Stony Brook in game one of the Gaels' doubleheader with the Seawolves Wednesday afternoon in the team's home opener at Rice Oval.  In game two, the Iona bats went silent in a 2-0 shutout loss.

Stony Brook scored the first run of the contest in the top of the second on an unearned run when an over throw on a stolen base attempt by Bernadette Tenuto.  Tenuto moved to third before a miscue in the outfield allowed her to come all the way around on the play.

Iona would take the lead for good with a five run third inning.  Sophomore Katie Jansson reached on an infield error to lead off the inning before junior Jodi Peterson followed with an infield single.  After the pair was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by senior Deanne Algeo, senior Chelsea Sheehan crushed a home run to right center to put the Gaels ahead 3-1.  Senior Alyssa Maiese would follow with a single to center before junior Eileen McCann doubled to right center.  With runners on second and third, and senior Allyssa James at the plate, Maiese scored on a wild pitch before McCann was drive in on a sacrifice fly by James.

In the fifth, Iona got some insurance when Algeo launched her first home run of the season to left field.

In the circle, Jackson allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out 11.  The 52 wins broke the record previously held by Iona College Hall of Famer Alison Higgs.  This season, Jackson has also established new records for career starts (88) and strikeouts (662).

In the second game, the Seawolves scored all the runs they would need in the second inning. Alyssa Hawley knocked in Nicole Hagerty with a single to Stony Brook up 1-0 before Suzanne Karath added another RBI single later in the inning.

Stony Brook's Allison Cukrov allowed just four hits, while striking out three.  Maiese took the loss for Iona, allowing six hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out four.

Iona is back in action Saturday, when they open MAAC play at Fairfield, beginning at 2:00 pm.
