BALTIMORE, MD - The Iona College softball team split its final two contests at the UMBC Retriever Classic on Sunday. In game one, Iona outlasted the host Retrievers in eight innings, 10-4 before dropping a close 8-7 decision to James Madison in the weekend finale.
The Gaels got on the board in the top of the second with two runs. With one out, sophomore
Katie Jansson doubled to left center before senior
Allyssa James singled to put runners on the corners. After James stole second, freshman
Brianna Schauer singled through the left side to deliver the first two runs of the day for the Gaels.
UMBC got on the board in their half of the inning when freshman Courtney Courtney Reinfeld drove in Hall, who led off the inning with a double to right center. The Retrivers would take a two run lead in the third inning. Senior Becca Bernheimer doubled to left to lead off the inning and with one out, senior Katie Ferguson walked. Sophomore Jessica Warner would follow with a home run to center field to put UMBC up by a score of 4-2.
Iona chipped at the lead with one run in the sixth before tying the game in the seventh. In the sixth, With two out, senior
Alyssa Maiese singled to right and was pinch run for by senior
Melanie Hay. An error allowed Jansson to reach and more importanly, moved Hay to third. James took care of the rest, driving in Hay with a single to move the Gaels to within one run, 4-3.
In the seventh, junior
Eileen McCann was called upon to pinch hit and doubled through the right side. A sacrifice by Schauer moved McCann to third before junior
Jodi Petersen tied the contest with a single to right field, tying the game at four and propelling the Gaels to a strong showing in extra innings.
In the eighth, Iona used the momentum of the previous two innings to come away with a season high six run inning. With international tie breaker rules in effect, pinch runner
Megan Sakowski was placed on second to start the inning. Maiese got the Gaels started quickly, scoring Sakowksi with a double to the right side. With one out and Maiese on third, James reached on an error that plated Maiese and put Iona up 6-4. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Petersen reached on an error to score both James and Schauer, who reached base with a single. Senior
Chelsea Sheehan would follow and plate two more insurance runs with a singled to left field, scoring Petersen and junior
Beth Kann.
UMBC would go in order to put Iona in the win column for the seventh time this season. Maiese got the win for the Gaels, striking out six and allowing just one hit and one walk in 3.2 innings of relief. Freshman
Carly Argyle was also strong in a relief role, allowing two hits and two walks in 1.1 innings. Senior
Sarah Jackson made the start for Iona, allowing four runs in three innings.
In the second game of the day, Iona got on the board in the top of the first inning. Petersen led with a single before Sheehan moved her along to second with a bunt. With two out, and now on third, Petersen scored on a wild pitch before Maiese picked up her first home run of the season to push the Gaels lead to 2-0.
The Dukes would take the lead with a five run third inning. Junior Haley Johnson would drive in senior Caitlen Manning with a bases loaded single to get the scoring started. Freshman Morgan Heath followed with a single to score senior Ashley Burnham. An Iona error would allow Johnson to score and a single by sophomore Caitlin Sandy would bring in Heath. A single to left field by Haley Widner would plate Sandy with final James Madison run of the inning.
JMU would once again strike in the fourth with three runs. A bunt single by junior Jasmine Butler started the inning. On third after a steal and a single by Burnham, a double steal allowed Butler to score and moved Burnham to second. With runners on the corners and one out, a steal by Heath at second allowed Burnham to score after an Iona error on the play. A sacrifice bunt by sophomore Lindsey Tomasz would score Heath with the third run of the inning.
Iona would put its own five run inning across in the fifth, but would be left one run short of the Dukes. Kann reached ona fielders choice and freshman
Angie Nieves and Petersen followed with singles to load the bases. Sheehan would plate pinch runner
Allison Hand with a single through the left side and cut the JMU lead to 8-3. Jansson followed with a walk to plate another run before a three-run double by Maiese would clear the bases for Iona and cut the lead to 8-7. The Gaels were unable to get the tying run across and went scoreless in the sixth inning before the game was called due to visibility.
Reba DePriest got the win for James Madison, going 4.1 innings and allowing seven runs. Maiese took the loss, allowing eight runs, five earned.
On Saturday evening, the Gaels dropped an evening matchup with Princeton 5-2. On Monday, Maiese and Sheehan were named to the All-Tournament Team. Iona is back in action Mar. 14, when they take on Northern Illinois in the first of seven games the Gaels will play in Florida during Spring Break.
