Water Polo Completes Perfect MAAC Weekend

STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Iona College women's water polo team wrapped up a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 10-9 win over Wagner Sunday morning.  On Saturday, Iona dominated a pair of MAAc contests, defeating Villanova 14-3 in the first game of the day before disposing of VMI 12-5.

In the win over Wagner, the Gaels took a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, and 6-4 at half, but Iona once again let an early lead get close as Wagner tied the contest at nine late in the fourth quarter.  Senior Cecilia Leonard's goal with 1:28 left in the game proved to be the game winner.  Sophomore Amy Olsen led the Gaels with three goals, while seniors Caitlin McGregor and Mackenzie Mone had two goals apiece.  Leonard, along with junior Alyssa Turza and sophomore Erika Lauraitis had one goal each.  Sophomore Marisa Gaynor stopped 12 shots, including two crucial late game saves to along with five steals.

Against Villanova on Saturday, Iona dominated from the get'go as the Gaels took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, with Lauraitis and Mone leading the way with two goals in the first eight minutes of play.  In the second half, Lauraitis scored two more goals while Leonard had three second half goals.

Leonard and Lauraitis each finished with four goals, while Mone found the net three times.  Olsen, McGregor and freshman Ashley DeMarzo each found the net once for the Maroon & Gold.  Gaynor made 11 saves in the win.

Against VMI, Iona once again got off to a great start, leading the Keydets 5-0 after the first half, and 8-1 at the half.  In the first half, Iona was led by two goals apiece by Olsen and freshman Katie Stelnicki.  After VMI outscored Iona 3-0 in the third, and cut the Iona lead to 8-4, the Gaels closed the door with four goals in final quarter.

Olsen led the Gaels with three goals, while Leonard and Stelnicki each scored twice.  Turza and Mone scored once, along with sophomores Hannah Cross and Sarah Hanly.  Gaynor made five saves, playing in the first and third quarters.  Freshman Devin Green played the second and fourth quarters, and made three saves.

The Gaels are back in action Saturday, when they travel to Loudonville, NY for a pair of MAAC contests, beginning at 11:30 am with a matchup with Marist.
