WEST HARTFORD, CT - A two-run single by senior 1B
Michael Chiaravalloti in the sixth inning proved to be the only tallies the Iona College baseball team needed in a 2-0 victory at Hartford in non-conference action at Fiondella Field. Five Gael hurlers combined for the seven-hit shutout, the squad's first of the season.
The Maroon & Gold (12-20) escaped five runners left on base in the last two innings of the contest to earn the win. Senior LHP
Justin Wiley made his season debut, tossing 1.2 innings and 28 pitches. Junior RHP Vinny Parisi allowed two base runners in three innings of work. Rookie RHP
Steve Basile (2-1) earned the win in relief, allowing a hit in 2.1 innings of work. Senior RHP
Derrick Bligh and junior RHP
Thomas Kriss shut the door in the eighth and ninth innings. Kriss earned his third save of the year.
With the bases loaded and one out, Chiaravalloti plated senior 3B
Chris Burke and freshman DH
Jimmy Guiliano to account for the Gaels' runs.
Guiliano and sophomore CF
Joe Torres provided two hits a piece at the top of the Gael lineup.
Seven different Hawks recorded the home team's seven hits. Hartford used four pitchers with reliever Zach Ferris (0-4) taking the loss.
Iona is back in action this weekend at Salesian Field when they host Niagara for a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series.
