Softball Slugs Its Way To 6-2 Win Over Fordham

BRONX, NY - The Iona College softball team struck for a season high 17 hits, including four apiece by juniors Jodi Petersen and Eileen McCann, en route to a 6-2 victory over Fordham University Tuesday afternoon at Bahoshy Field.  The loss was the first handed to the Rams on their home field this season.

Iona got on the board with one runs in the top of the second inning.  Junior Jodi Peterson led the game off with an infield single into the hole at short. Two batters later, junior Eileen McCann singled through the right side and senior Alyssa Maiese loaded the bases with an infield hit through the left side. With two outs, senior Allyssa James lined a two-run single up the middle to score Peterson and McCann, but Maiese was tagged out on the play at third to end the Iona inning.

Fordham tied the score in the bottom of the second as Brianna Turgeon reached on an Iona error. Turgeon tagged and moved to second on a deep foul out to right field before Kat VanBenschoten lined a single to right, putting runners on the corners. Gabby Luety loaded the bases with a walk and Lindsey Bright got Fordham on the board with an infield single before Nicole Callahan tied the game at two with another Fordham infield single.

Iona captured the lead for good in the top of the fourth.  Junior Katie Jansson singled through the right side with one out before Peterson singled, putting runners on first and second.  With two outs, McCann push the Iona lead to 3-2 lead with a double to left field, scoring Jansson.

The Gaels scored a couple of very loud insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Peterson led off the inning with a solo home run, just over the left field fence,  and McCann singled to left, Maiese launched a bomb over the right center field wall to give Iona a 6-2 lead.

Senior Sarah Jackson got the win in relief or starter Maiese, allowing four hits and one walk in four innings to earn her 13th win of the season.  Taylor Pirone was handed the loss, allowing 10 hits and three runs in four innings.

Iona is back in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon when they host Rutgers at Rice Oval beginning at 2:30 pm.
