Ninth Inning Rally Leads To Win At Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ - A go-ahead two-out RBI single by senior SS Eric Capowski capped a three-run ninth inning rally to lead the Iona College baseball team to a 5-4 victory over the Big East's Rutgers.

Sophomore CF Joe Torres had two hits, a run scored an RBI while junior 3B Matthew Kriss continued his torrid hitting with two hits and two runs of his own. Kriss extended his hitting streak to 10 games and raised his batting average to .301. In the past four contests he has gone 9-for-15 with five runs scored.

The Gaels struck first in the top of the second as senior DH/C James Beck drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Iona built a 2-0 lead in the next inning on an RBI single by senior LF Chris Burke.

The Scarlet Knights evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth with two tallies off rookie LHP John Nargoski. They took a 4-2 lead in the next frame with two runs against rookie RHP Steve Basile.

Both teams matched zeroes over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before the Gaels ninth inning rally.

Back-to-back singles by Kriss and freshman PH Jimmy Guiliano started the frame. With one out, Kriss scored on an RBI single by junior C Sean Menickella. After a sac bunt by sophomore 2B Bobby Vitulano advanced runners to second and third, Torres stepped up and tied the game with an RBI base hit, the Gaels fourth of the inning. Capowski delivered a two-out single to left to plate freshman PR Rommel Gramonte as the Maroon & Gold regained the lead.

Sophomore RHP Thomas Kriss closed out the contest with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to earn his sixth save of the inning. Senior RHP Conan Leon (1-1) picked up the win, tossing a scoreless eighth inning.

Rutgers' 3B Patrick Kivlehan homered to lead off the fourth inning and drove in another run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth for the home team.

The Gaels complete their season on Friday and Saturday in a three-game MAAC series at Saint Peter's. The start time for both days including the Friday doubleheader is at noon.
