TOWSON, MD - The Iona College softball team battled frigid temperatures and came away with a split of a pair of non-conference contests Saturday at the Towson Softball Tournament. In game one, Iona overcame an early deficit and topped Lehigh 8-5 before dropping the second game of the day 5-4 to the host Tigers.
Lehigh was able to put three runs across in the first inning. Alexis Watanabe opened the frame with a triple down the right field line. Morgan Decker woudl then plate her teammate with a single to center. An infield error put runners on first and second before Cassie Waggy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. MacKenzie Velasquez singled to drive in a run before Emma Capetz followed with another RBI single to drive in Decker with third third Mountain Hawks run of the inning.
The Mountain Hawks would add another run in the third on a home run by Waggy to center field, pushing the Iona deficit to four. Iona would crack the scoreboard in a big way in the fourth, plating four runs on five hits. Singles by senior

Brianna Schauer would then single to right to plate the first two Iona runs of the day. Freshman Briana King would follow with a two run double to left field, knotting the game at four.
Lehigh would reclaim the lead in the fourth when pinch runner Carissa Zito scored on an Iona error, putting the Mountain ahead 5-4.
Iona would plate the deciding runs with a four run rally in the fifth inning. Senior
Eileen McCann led off with a single to right field. An error put sophomore
Allison Hand on the bases with McCann. A bunt single by Kann followed with another error allowing McCann to score on the play and tie the game at five.
With runners on the corners, freshman
Christine Costello plated Hand with a single to center to the Gaels a one run lead. After a ground out pushed the runners into scoring position, Schauer delivered a two run double down the left field line, giving Iona an 8-5 lead.
Freshman
Jordan Courage was able to hold onto the lead and grabbed her first collegiate victory. The rookie hurler allowed nine hits and three earned runs in seven innings. Rebecca Bliss took the loss for Lehigh, allowing three runs and three hits in three innings of relief.
In the second game of the day, the Gaels found themselves in an early run hole before their first at-bat as Towson scored three runs in the top of the first inning. The Tigers put across the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Macie McGeehan, scoring Olivia Yarbrough. A two-run home run by Bina Abbott would follow as Towson took a 3-0 lead.
Iona cut into the deficit with a run in the bottom of the inning. A walk by McCann led off the inning. After a sac bunt by Hand, Kann drove in her teammate with a single to left center.
Iona would tie the game in its next turn at the plate. Schauer led off with a single to right before King reached on a fielder's choice, with an error by Towson keeping Schauer on the bases. The pair were bunted into scoring position by freshman
Sarah Schutz before Hand drove them in with a double to left center.
Towson would plate what turned out to be the deciding runs in the top of the fifth inning. Yarbrough scored on an Iona error and Delanie Dunham scored on a wild pitch by Iona pitcher
Carly Argyle.
Iona was able to cut the 5-3 deficit on an RBI single by Schauer but with were unable to score the tying run from third with two outs in the inning.
Towson's Ambar Hickman got the win in relief, allowing two hits and one run in relief of the starter Missy McCormick. Argyle took the loss, allowing three hits and five runs, three earned, in seven innings while striking out nine batters.
Iona concludes the Towson Invitational Sunday, beginning aat 10:30 am with a matchup against Lehigh before wrapping up the weekend against Columbia at 12:45 pm.
