Box Score 2 NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Canisius' pitching held the Iona College baseball team off the scoreboard in a doubleheader sweep in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at City Park. The Golden Griffins shut out Iona 7-0 in the opener and 8-0 in the nightcap. In game two, the Griffs used three pitchers to hold the Maroon & Gold without a hit.
Holding a 2-0 lead through five innings, Canisius scored five runs in the top of the six inning to break the game open. The Griffs scored on one hit and three Gael errors in the frame. Senior 3B Matthew Kriss and junior LF Jimmy Guiliano had the Gaels lone hits.
Rookie RHP Max Bruckner took the loss. He tossed 5.1 innings allowing five hits and three earned runs with two walks and a strikeout. Canisius RHP Devon Stewart struck out five in the complete game effort.
Canisius scored twice in the fourth, twice in the sixth and four times in the ninth inning in game two. Starter LHP Alex Godzak walked two batters and struck out six in seven innings of work. He was relieved by scoreless innings by RHPs Rohn Pierce and Jon Fitzsimmons. The two walks were the lone base runners for the Maroon & Gold.
Junior LHP Eddie Macaluso took the loss. He pitched 6.2 innings and allowed just five hits before two Griffs extra base hits took him out of the game in the seventh. He allowed three earned runs and struck out four batters.
Iona is back in action Wednesday afternoon at the Big East's Rutgers for a 3:00 pm start.
