Box Score 2 NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at City Park. The Gaels fell 3-2 in 11 innings in the opener and 4-2 in the night cap.
Iona pounded out 16 hits in game one but could only scratch across two runs. Junior CF Joe Torres, sophomore LF Jimmy Guiliano and freshman DH Zach Brown had three hits a piece while junior RF Joe Smith and freshman IF Vinny DeMaria had two hits in the loss.
The Gaels got on the board in their first at bat when Torres scored on the front end of a double steal attempt following a strikeout of rookie C Carmine Palummo. The score would remain tied until the top of the seventh inning.
A two-out single by Siena freshman SS Tyler Martis knotted the score at 1-1 in the seventh. Iona regained the lead in the bottom of the inning as Martis' shortstop counterpart DeMaria home Smith to give Iona a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the ninth, 1B Vinny Citro's two-out RBI single sent the game to extra innings. The Gaels threatened in both the ninth and 10th innings, but could not find a run. In the 11th, Siena CF Mike Fish beat out a bouncer in the shortstop hole to plate the eventual game winning run.
Junior LHP Eddie Macaluso tossed the game's first seven innings for the Gaels allowing a run on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Senior RHP Conan Leon took the loss after allowing the leadoff hitter on in the 11th.
Siena's Matt Quintana earned the win in relief; Neil Fryer pitched a scoreless 11th inning for the save. Left fielder Andres Ortiz two hits led the Saints in the game one victory.
In the nightcap Siena never trailed as the scored a run in the first and third innings to take a 2-1 lead. The visiting team went ahead 4-0 after two runs in the fifth.
Iona got on the scoreboard on an RBI single by DeMaria plated Brown with one out. The Maroon & Gold's second run in the sixth inning on Smith's RBI ground out.
Rookie 2B Matt Byrne was the lone Gael with multiple hits, with two singles. Iona scored its two runs on nine hits.
Rookie RHP Max Bruckner took the loss. He was charged with all four runs in 4.2 innings of work. Rookie RHP Jake Kurz tossed two scoreless innings of relief before senior RHP Kenny Dietrich recorded the final out in the top of the seventh inning.
Siena's Ortiz was 3-for-3 with a double. Third baseman Brian Fay also had two hits. Senior RHP Justin Brantley earned the win tossing 5.2 innings. Fryer picked up the save in relief.
The two teams complete the three-game series tomorrow at noon at City Park.
