Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College baseball team fell 8-4 to Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at City Park. Following the game, the Gaels hosted several teams for a free baseball clinic on Little League Day.
Iona jumped out two a 2-0 lead with a run each in the second and third innings. An RBI single by senior 1B Chris Sand drove in the game's first run as rookie C Carmine Palummo scored from third base with no outs. In the third, sophomore LF Jimmy Guiliano drove in rookie 2B Matt Byrne.
Siena halved scored at least once in the fourth through seventh innings, taking the lead with two runs in the fifth. The visitor's eighth run came in the top of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, a two-out, two-run double by Palummo accounted for the Gaels final runs.
Palummo was 3-for-5 on the afternoon with the double and two RBI. Byrne, Sand and senior 3B Matthew Kriss each had two hits. Iona out hit Siena 13-10 in the contest.
Sophomore RHP Steve Basile took the loss. He gave up three runs on three hits and three walks in five innings of work.
Siena 1B Vincent Citro was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and two walks. Catcher Larry Balkwill also had two hits including a bases clearing triple in the seventh inning.
RHP Ed Lewicki earned the win in seven innings of work.
The Gaels are back in action in two mid-week non-conference tilts on the road, at Fordham Tuesday and at Seton Hall Wednesday. It is the start of a 14-game road trip before completing the season at home May 16-17 vs. Saint Peter's.
