WEST POINT, NY - The Iona College softball team dropped a non-conference contest to Army 3-2 in extra innings Tuesday afternoon at Army's Softball Complex.
Freshman Sarah Schutz and junior Katie Jansson each picked up two hits for the Gaels, while sophomore Allison Hand and freshman Brianna King each drove in a run.
The Black Knights got out to an early lead in the first inning when Alex Reynolds hit a two-run home run over the left center field wall.
Iona cut the deficit in half in the sixth inning, when Hand drove in senior Beth Kann with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Gaels would then tie the game in the seventh. Jansson led off with a double to left center. After a sacrifice bunt moved Jansson to third, King deliver the game tying hit with a single to right field.
In the bottom of the ninth, Army would plate the winning run. After a pair of two out walks, pinch hitter Rae Anne Payleitner delivered a single to drive in pinch runner Alyssa Strobehn with the game's winning tally.
Carly Argyle took the loss for Iona in relief, allowing one run and one hit in 2.0 innings of work. Freshman Jordan Courage got the start for the Gaels, and allowed two runs, six hits and three walks in 6.2 innings.
Morgan Lashley got the win for Army, allowing eight hits, three walks and two runs over nine innings.
Iona is back in action Thursday at 3:30 pm, when it travels to Rutgers for a non-conference matchup.
