Box Score SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Seton Hall scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a tie in a 4-2 win over the Iona College baseball team in non-conference action at Owen T. Carrol Field. The Gaels knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the inning but could not find the go-ahead run in the loss.
Seton Hall scratched across a run in the second and sixth innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the eighth, senior 1B Matthew Kriss got Iona on the scoreboard with a bases loaded single with one out. Two batters later, rookie Travis Mistretta smacked the second offering he saw off the pitcher into centerfield to plate the tying run.
On a 1-2 count in the bottom of the eighth, C Dillon Hamlin went the other way with the pitch for a two-run single to put the Pirates ahead for good.
Junior CF Joe Torres and rookie SS Vinny Demaria each had two hits in the loss.
Redshirt freshman RHP Mariano Rivera tossed the game's first 4.2 innings allowing a run on six hits while waking two batters. Rookie RHP Max Bruckner and senior RHPs Matt Marley and Thomas Kriss closed out the game. Marley took the hard luck loss.
Seton Hall's Anthony Elia had five strikeouts and allowed six hits in a seven-inning no-decision. Brian Gilbert earned the win in relief. Third baseman Kyle Grimm and shortstop Giuseppe Papaccio had three hits a piece for the Pirates.
The Gaels are back in MAAC action this weekend for a three-game series at Marist.
