BRONX, NY - The Iona College softball team surrendered an early lead to Fordham, and were unable to come back, falling to the host Rams 8-2 Tuesday afternoon at Bahoshy Field.
Senior Jodi Petersen and freshman Brianna King each produced multi-hit games with two hits apiece, while Petersen recorded the team's lone run batted in.
Fordham was able to jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Gabby Luety struck a home run.
The Rams would then extend the lead to four on an RBI single by Chelsea Palumbo to left field in the third inning before a sacrifice fly by Luety in the fourth inning gave the home
squad a 5-0 lead.
The Gaels would plate their first run of the contest in the top of the sixth inning. Petersen led off the inning with a single. Three batters later, freshman Sarah Schutz singled up the middle, with a Fordham error allowing Petersen to come all the way around to score, pushing the Gaels within four.
Fordham would then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the frame. Brianna Turgeon delivered a run scoring double to left field, before Palumbo struck for a two-run single up
the middle.
Iona would put together a rally in the seventh, when Petersen plated King with an run scoring groundout to second with one out, but Fordham pitcher Taylor Pirone would retire the final
batter of the game on a fly ball to center.
Sophomore Carly Argyle (7-18) took the loss for Iona, eight runs, seven earned, posting her 13th complete game of the season. Fordham's Patty Maloney (2-2) got the win for the Rams, allowing just two hits over four innings. Pirone allowing six hits, two runs, one earned, in three innings of relief work.
Iona is back in action Wednesday, when it travels to Fairleigh Dickinson for a single non-conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
